James A. McVie of Victoria, British Columbia was the face behind the camera for 47 years, capturing on film the beauty and action of yachting. As his biography states, “Jim McVie was internationally renowned as a specialist in marine photography, covering yachting events is North America, Great Britain, Japan, and Australia.” In the Pacific Northwest, Jim became locally known as the “Eyes of the Swiftsure Classic Yacht Race”.
A wise person once said that sailors are “a different breed”. After all, something must be different about them to make them want to return, year after year, to a yacht race about which they complain bitterly.

Yes, we’re gearing up for Swiftsure – again! In Victoria, you can set your calendar by it. Once the Victoria Day weekend is behind us, the United States’ Memorial Day weekend is upon us. And, that means it’s time for hundreds of yachts and sailors to descend upon Victoria for the Swiftsure International Yacht Race!

Welcome to Swiftsure 2010. Our organizing committee members from Royal Victoria Yacht Club are excited about this year’s race. We are exploring a number of new initiatives to improve communication with the racers and to make our race and event a more enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone.
One initiative is our new blog site which is being moderated by Dr. John Green, our new Racer Relations Chair. He will be putting out a number of proposals for discussion and will look forward to your participation in shaping our event.
We are also looking at improvements in our race communications and tracking and will be presenting these to you here as details are finalized.
The shore activities will continue to improve as we look to improvements in our food services area as well as the “Bimini”. We look forward to continued good music and fellowship.
Check in with this site over the next few months as details are finalized and published.
Yours in racing
Bill Conconi
